Agribusiness has always been a global business since the beginning of trade with commodities moving from areas of low cost production to wealthier markets. Despite continued political intervention the global trade goes on and sophisticated high tech low cost producers such as Brazil and Malaysia have developed their economies based on agriculture and agribusiness. The development of the Chinese and Indian economies is resulting in rapidly increasing demand for high value products such as milk and meat. Biofuels are bringing further competition to the market place, in the main putting a bottom into the market.
Looking forward, only 11% of world landmass is suitable for growing crops, and with increasing populations and Per Capita Incomes plus a global shift from staples (rice & grains) to high protein and fat foodstuffs (meat & dairy) demand set to push supply to the limits. Huge advances in efficiency and technical skill will be necessary to ensure world markets are supplied with a simple necessity, food.
With increasing wealth from oil and commodities, and improving political stability Africa is well placed to take advantage of the forthcoming opportunities. Population growth and increasing urbanisation will require a fresh approach to agriculture in the continent; this is what Feronia will bring.
